Young classics @ Viimsi Artium: Piret Mikalai (piano), students of Viimsi Music School

The concert series “Young Classics @ Viimsi Artium” presents young musicians from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and the Viimsi Music School. The young instrumentalists will have an opportunity to draw inspiration and perform together with the more experienced musicians and enjoy the excellent acoustics of the Viimsi Artium Chamber Hall.

Piret Mikalai started her piano studies in 2004 at the Tallinn Music High School in Ira Floss’s piano class. Since 2016, she has been studying at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT), supervised by Prof. Peep Lassmann and Mihkel Poll. After earning her bachelor’s degree in 2019, she furthered her skills at Mozarteum University in Salzburg. Piret is currently completing her master’s studies at EAMT.
Piret Mikalai has participated in many international and national piano competitions. She has won the II prize (2012) and the first prize (2013) at the All-Estonian Young Pianists’ Competition “Estonian Sound”; diploma at the 5th International Pianists’ Competition “Young Virtuoso” in Riga (2013); diploma at the Stockholm International Music Competition (2014); Prize of the Estonian Piano Teachers’ Association at the VIII Estonian Pianists’ Competition (2014); laureate titles in 2014 and 2015, and in 2016 I prize in the republican competition between middle-level music schools; finalist diploma 5. Riga International Competition for Young Pianists (2016), I place in the Stein Pianists’ Competition (2019), II place in the EAMT Beethoven Competition (2020) and I place in the Laine Metsa Competition (2021). In 2018, she was awarded the Lilian Semper Scholarship, the 2020 Yamaha Scholarship, and the Helmi Valtman Scholarship. He has performed on many different stages and has been a soloist in front of the Narva City Orchestra, the TMKK Symphony Orchestra and the EAMT Symphony Orchestra.

In cooperation with Hanna Taube, she received the first prize at the International Chamber Ensemble Competition in Klaipeda (2015) and the first prize at the competition-festival “Renaissance” in Gyumri (2016).

Piret Mikalai has participated in the master classes of Ivar Ilya, Igor Cognolato, Harald Ossberger, Pier Francesco Forlenza, Karl-Andreas Kolly, Alexander Kobrini, Mira Martšenko, Matti Raekallio and others.
