Beethoven’s Piano Trios II (Poll-Varema-Poll)

As part of the series “Beethoven’s Piano Trios”, dedicated to Beethoven’s work, Mari Poll (violin), Henry-David Varema (cello) and Mihkel Poll (piano) bring to the audience all the works written by the composer in this genre.

The second concert in the series will feature:

Trio G-duur op. 1 nr 2 (1794/95)

Allegretto B-duur WoO 39 (1812)

Trio D-duur op. 70 nr 1 (“Ghost” / “Vaim”) (1808)

The piano trio was a beloved chamber genre in Vienna in the second half of the 18th century, cultivated in abundance in domestic ensemble playing, both in the middle class and in the circle of aristocrats. An important role in the formation of the genre was played by the composer Joseph Haydn, whose trios later also served as an example for Beethoven. Beethoven’s contribution to the development of the piano trio, however, was significant – under his guidance there was a noticeable expansion of the genre and the trio developed into a weighty instrumental cycle.

Mari Poll, Henry-David Varema and Mihkel Poll are internationally acclaimed performers who have been active as a trio since 2013.

The ensemble`s repertoire includes a wide range of music from Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms to works by contemporary composers, while works buy Estonian composers such as Artur Lemba, Heino Eller, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Arvo Pärt and Riho Esko Maimets, play a special place in the trio’s repertoire. However, in the 2022/2023 season, the trio’s focus will be Beethoven to perform the composer’s eight piano trios as a full cycle.
