Trips into the nature and workshops by Viimsi Science School

Viimsi Science School and the Culture and Community Festival Põhja Konn invite both children and adults- parents and grandparents, locals and visitors to take part in emotional and educational field trips to the nature and and workshops. Rejoice in the beauty of the countryside around you and learn something new!

FIELD TRIPS AND NATURE TOURS:

Game tracks

19/09 from 17.00 to 19.30

Hike in the forest of the Viimsi peninsula. Search for traces of various wild animals, analysis of the shape of the trace, comparison of traces, understanding the direction and purpose of the trails. Gathering at the Tädu spruce bus stop (in the direction of Randvere). Weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes and drinking water are required. Supervised by Peeter Hussar.

Migratory birds on the peninsula

22/09 from 17.00 to 19.00

A hike in coastal areas to find waterfowl. Birdwatching with binoculars under the guidance of an experienced instructor. A conversation about birds nesting in Estonia. Gathering in the parking lot of Coop Rohuneeme store. Weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes and drinking water are required. Supervised by Tiit Vohta

HIKES and WORKSHOPS:

Green design workshop – use your creativity and recreate nature environment of Viimsi at ARTIUM

18/09-19/09

On September 18-19, all those interested both in art and nature, will have the opportunity to participate in a green design workshop, with the aim to collectively build a nature installation at ARTIUM.

Participants will first gather mosses, tree branches, leaves, stones, and other natural materials from the forest. Then, during a two-day workshop, nature environment of Viimsi will be recreated in the lobby of the venue.

The aim of workshop is to make environmental-friendly art as well as promote the use of natural materials in installations and set designs. The workshop is conducted by Siim Sareal, the technical producer of ARTIUM; Matti Vainio, the director of Viimsi Art School and Kadri Saluri, the director of Viimsi Science School.

Time schedule:

Mon ,18/09

3p.m. – participants gather in the lobby, introduction of the workshop workshopi tutvustus

3.30 p.m. – car-trip to the forest ( location to be specified)

4p.m. – 7p.m. – gathering of materials from the nature to be used in the workshop the next day.

3p.m.-6p.m. – execution of the workshop to create a nature installation. in the lobby of ARTIUM

Discoveries of the night sky

21/09 from 20:00 to 22:00

Observation of stars, planets, and other celestial bodies with telescopes. Discussions on the sky map, the Big Bang theory, Kepler’s law, etc. Using programs for observing the sky (using tablets). Man-made technique in the visible sky and beyond. The place of Planet Earth in the universe (with the discussion of motion). Viimsi Science School room 135. Weather-appropriate clothing is required Instructor by Marek Gordeyev.

Microscopes-telescopes

23.09 from 20:00 to 22:00

A workshop takes place in indoor and outdoor areas, where the participant can get acquainted with the micro and macro worlds. The theory of lenses and other components of microscopes and telescopes is associated with colorful practice under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Who was Bernhard Schmidt? For microscopic observations part of the preparations are prepared locally. in room 135 of the Viimsi Science School. Weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes are required. Supervised by Marek Gordejev.

Rocks in limestone outcrop

24.09 from 12.00 to 14.30

It includes a walk under and on top of the limestone cliff (klint) near Viimsi Artium, and even along the stairs of the Põhja Konn staircase  along the tangible limestone cliff itself. Discoveries of limestone klint, experiments with rocks (study of rocks with microscopes, finding out the density, etc.). Instructed by Leana Reiu

Biological, mycological and botanical findings

24/09 from 15.00 to 17.00

The workshop includes a walk on the Karulaugu hiking trail. The aim is to get acquainted with the local fauna and flora and to explore life on a smaller scale (lenses, keys) The role of insects in the ecosystem, the mushroom kingdom and abundant vegetation. Observation with microscopes in the laboratory and experiments. Weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes are required. Supervised by Leana Reiu, Viimsi Science School room 135.

Photographic equipment through the ages

19/09 from 18.00 to 19.30

Testing and photo editing for different types of cameras. Mobile phone cameras are also used in the workshop.

Architectonics

20/09 from 18.00 to 19.30

The development of building capabilities through the history of mankind. From a simpler cave-home to a modern concrete massif. Wood in construction. Metal in construction. Directions of architecture, development through history. Acquaintance with samples of building materials (incl. modern composite materials). Supervised by Aare Baumer, in room 125 of the Viimsi Science School.

Installations for a non-human-centered audience

24/09 from 10.00 to 16.00

Lecture-discussion, a short expedition outdoors with organic harvesting and a practical workshop on the manufacture of materials. Installations for a non-human-centered world will be completed, considering the needs of animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and other living beings in a matrix equivalent to human. Weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes are required. Supervised by Riina Õun, Viimsi Science School room 125.
